Artsy Arlo Guthrie is the son of legendary folk singer/songwriter Woody Guthrie. The Brooklyn boy was immersed in music during his youth. In other words, the Big Apple babe didn’t fall from the tree. By the time Arlo turned 20, he was touring around the world, performing protest songs. His cover of Steve Goodman’s “City of New Orleans” (1972) made the Top 40 and his ballad “Massachusetts” (1976) became the state’s official folk song. Yet Arlo is best known for his blues recording “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” (1967). The number inspired the film Alice’s Restaurant (1969). Directed by Arthur Penn, the R-rated musical features James Broderick, Pat Quinn, Pete Seeger, and Guthrie’s nearly naked body.
