Biography

He was one of the most celebrated actors of his generation (and the dude on the Newman’s Own salad dressing bottle), but amid all the Oscars, SAG Awards, Golden Globes, and BAFTAs, let us not forget: in his day, Paul Newman was a total babe. Born in suburban Shaker Heights, Ohio, Paul served in the Navy during WWII. But acting was always his first love, and after the war ended, he studied under famed acting coach Lee Strasburg, and broke into the industry with hour-long dramas during the early days of television. His role as Ben Quick in The Long, Hot Summer (1958; it also starred his wife Joanne Woodward) brought him his first taste of big-screen fame, and his character Brick in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) made the actor a star, earning him his first Oscar nomination (he had nine total, and won three). Thanks to his anti-establishment persona, good looks, and even better acting talent, he was one of the few actors to transition from the staid '50s to the swinging '60s. From there, he became a Hollywood legend, starring in numerous blockbuster movies, as well as the occasional Emmy-winning television role (Empire Falls mini-series (2005)). Given his prolific and popular portfolio, you can catch him shirtless in any number of roles, including as Ari Ben Canaan in Exodus (1960), Chance Wayne in Sweet Bird of Youth (1962), and as the ever sexy Luke Jackson in Cool Hand Luke (1967). Elsewhere, you’ll know Paul best from any number of other notable films, including The Hustler (1961), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1968), The Sting (1972), Slapshot (1977), Absence of Malice (1981), The Verdict (1982), The Color of Money (1986), Nobody’s Food (1994), Twilight (1998), Road to Perdition (2002), and one of his last films, as the voice of Doc Hudson in the animated hit Cars (2006). Paul passed away from lung cancer in 2008 at the age of 83, leaving behind an unmatched legacy.
