Happy Together (1997)

Fap-py Together, we mean Happy Together (1997), is a heartbreaking gay romantic drama, nominated for almost every category imaginable at the 1998 Hong Kong Film Awards. The movie centers on boyfriends Lai (Tony Leung Chiu Wai) and Ho (Leslie Cheung) who move from Hong Kong to Argentina together. Things in their relationship begin to fall apart as abusive tendencies are exacerbated in a foreign land, especially when what was supposed to be a romantic hiking trip goes so wrong they don't even want to touch each other's dongs. This, mixed with a little bit of sleeping around with those Argentinian boys, leads to separation and despair. But their breakup isn't quite an even one. Lai is so poor he has to stay in Argentina and work as a bouncer until he can raise enough money to go home, while Ho spends his days having sex with any hot Argentinean men he can get into bed. When Ho ends up beaten after a tryst gone wrong, Lai cares for him. But even all that tenderness isn't enough to stop them from starting to fight again. Will our Hong Kong homos rekindle their love in Argentina or is it just a matter of time and money before they break up together?
