When it comes to films with impressive credits, it doesn’t get much better than this. The Comfort of Strangers (1989) is directed by Paul (American Gigolo, Auto Focus, Cat People) Schrader with a screenplay adapted from Ian McEwan’s same-named novel by Harold (The Servant, The Go-Between) Pinter. If that’s not thrilling enough, the psychological thriller stars Christopher (The Deer Hunter, Pulp Fiction, Wedding Crashers) Walken. The story follows English lovers Colin Mayhew (Rupert Everett) and Mary Kenway (Natasha Richardson) who are falling out of love with each other. As such, they head to Venice to spice up their sex life. One night, the couple loses their way en route to a restaurant. That’s when they meet a strange stranger named Robert (Walken) who invites them to dine with him which ends with Mary and Colin sleeping on the street. Don’t ask. When the two run into Robert again, he invites them to his home. But when they arrive, they’re greeted by his wife Caroline (Helen Mirren) because Robert is MIA. Needless to say, the more time spent in Robert’s world, the more bizarre and disturbing things get. Audiences were apparently weirded out by this pic since it was a box office flop. But, if you ever wondered when Mr. Everett first got naked in a movie, wonder no more. In one scene, Rupert reveals his rump during a hump with his lady love. In another, he hops out of bed and struts his stuff in the buff. We’re totally comfortable with that!
