There’s no confusing the comedies Taxi Zum Klo (1980) and Taxi (2004) with the psychological thriller Taxi Driver (1976). Thanks to Martin Scorsese’s direction, Paul Schrader’s screenplay and a star-power performance by Robert De Niro, this crime drama is a cinematic classic! In addition to Quentin Tarantino declaring it one of the 10 greatest movies, the American Film Institute ranked the pic’s famous line “You talkin’ to me?” as the 10th most memorable movie quote of all time. Obviously, it’s a tribute to the titular character Travis Bickle (DeNiro) who goes through an existential crisis after seeing all of the degradation on the streets of the Big rotting Apple. In other words, Travis is driven to madness as he drives his cab. Perhaps that’s because he encounters tweenaged prostitute Iris Steensma (BAFTA and David di Donatello Award winner Jodie Foster) and her pimp Matthew “Sport” Higgins (Harvey Keitel). The acclaimed film also features Albert Brooks as Tom; Cybill Shepherd as a campaign volunteer named Betsy; Peter Boyle as Wizard; and Scorsese himself as an extra. After all, Taxi Driver is considered an indie flick. Yet despite its modest budget, the neo-noir movie received 4 Academy Award nominations including one for Best Picture. Alas, its anti-establishment messaging didn’t lead to any Oscar wins. Even worse, Mr. Bickle doesn’t whip out his pickle! But rage has made Bobby mean, lean and muscular. Indeed, you can ogle his fit physique in a series of shots that showcase Mr. DeNiro’s DePecs. Yeah, we’re talking to you!
