Review

Hostages (1992) is a made-for-cable docudrama about five Western civilians taken hostage and held captive in Lebanon for five years during the mid 1980s. The film interjects newsreel footage with re-enactments to show the horrific circumstances the melting pot of hostages—Terry Anderson (Jay O. Sanders), Thomas Sutherland (Josef Sommer), Frank Reed (Harry Dean Stanton), John McCarthy (Colin Firth), Terry Waite (Conrad Asquith), and Brian Keenan (Ciarán Hinds)—had to endure at the hands of the hellish Hezbollah. Concurrently, the movie also follows the struggles of their family members as they struggle against government bureaucracy to free their captive loved ones. Terrorism is never sexy, but Colin Firth turns a humiliating and scary scene into an enjoyable moment of flesh when he is stripped naked and displays his roughed up rump. It’s not the most conducive scene, but it just might make you hold yourself hostage!
